Match Review

Geelong broke all its records against Carlton in a crushing 59-point triumph at Deakin University. The Cats’ previous best score against the Blues was 8.3 (51), its biggest win was 33 points and its lowest score conceded was 4.7 (31), with all comprehensively beaten as they laid down an early marker on the season. The 2021 grand finalists kicked clear from the outset, conceded just one behind in the first half and finishing strongly with four majors in the last term for an early percentage boost. Paige Sheppard was sensational in the middle for Geelong, racking up 26 disposals, 10 clearances and five tackles, with Tamara Smith (20, 12 tackles, seven clearances) not far behind. Ruck Olivia Barber gave the Blues nightmares, pulling in nine marks and kicking three goals to go with 12 hitouts, key forward Claudia Gunjaca booted 2.3 and Sachi Degiacomi and Mia Skinner also kicked two. Carlton struggled to get its hands on the ball, with Maddy Guerin (16, six tackles) and Millie Klingbeil (15) leading its stats sheet, while Imogen Milford, Vanessa Murphy and debutant Jessica Stramandinoli had seven tackles each.

Match Review

Blues' comeback stun Saints
Carlton produced a remarkable turnaround in form to stun the Southern Saints by eight points at Ikon Park. The Blues crashed to a 10-goal loss at Geelong in the opening round while the Saints ended Collingwood's 18-match winning streak, but both teams' form couldn't have been more different on Saturday. The Saints were blighted by poor kicking for goal last season, and while they got away with it against the Magpies (4.5), it bit them hard against the Blues as they trailed for all but a three-and-a-half-minute period in the second quarter when Poppy Schaap (two goals) put the home team in front for good despite only have three (all accurate) scoring shots in the opening half. Second-gamer Lily Goss (17 disposals, eight tackles, nine clearances) and fourth-game former Cat Annie Lee (14, four rebounds) were outstanding for the Blues, while Jorja Borg had a huge 35 hitouts and Millie Klingbeil (20, five clearances, one goal), Ashlee Thorneycroft (17, 10 tackles) were other prime movers in the victory. Deanna Jolliffe was in everything for the Saints to finish with 20 disposals, 11 tackles and five clearances, while Hannah Stuart (17, six tackles), Winnie Laing (16, five marks, five tackles) and Grace Buchan (15, five marks) were others to shine.

Match Review

Federica Frew produced a career game to remember, kicking a stunning six goals as Essendon continued its blistering start to the season and brought Carlton crashing back to earth by a record 52 points at Ikon Park on Sunday. Frew terrorised the Blues’ defence with five first-half majors as the Bombers kicked the first eight goals and 11 out of 12 to three quarter-time before the home team put some respectability on the board in the last term with three goals to one. She also booted the last goal of the game to finish with 6.2 from nine disposals as Essendon logged its highest score against Carlton, its highest away from its two home venues (by 27 points), its biggest away win and the overall highest score against the Blues at Ikon Park while handing them their biggest loss at the ground. The Bombers set up brilliantly across half back, winning disposals 243-201 and inside-50s 36-22 despite being beaten in the centre (36-22 hitouts and 25-19 clearances), with third-gamer Amelia Radford enjoying a breakout game with 25 disposals, five marks and six inside-50's. The league’s best player, co-captain Georgia Nanscawen, dominated again to rack up 22 touches, six marks and nine tackles, while former skipper Courtney Ugle (18) and Jordan Zanchetta (17) also performed well and Renee Tierney kicked three goals for the second week in a row to move to eight for the season. Carlton was best served by Millie Klingbeil, who was important in the midfield victory with 19 touches, five tackles, nine clearances and a goal underneath dominant ruck Jorja Borg (31 hitouts, six tackles), while impressive rookie Lily Goss (20 disposals, eight tackles) continues to shine as she seeks an AFLW contract and draftee Imogen Milford snagged three goals. The experienced Lauren Brazzale (18), Brooke Walker (seven tackles) and Annie Lee (eight rebounds, six tackles) could also hold their heads high for Carlton. Essendon, however, is sweating on the availability of star Grace Dicker for its clash with Williamstown this week after she was referred directly to the tribunal by the MRP for alleged rough conduct on Blue Brooke Vernon during the third quarter. The incident was graded as careless conduct with severe impact and high contact.

Match Review

Port Melbourne broke through for its first win of the season, holding off a late Carlton fightback to salute by 20 points at Ikon Park – meaning both teams to go goalless in Round 3 bounced back to sing the song in Round 4. The Blues booted the first goal through Charlotte Hammans before the Borough dominated the rest of the first half and would have had the game won but for their poor conversion – they kicked 3.8 to 1.3. It was a rare downside to what was a quality game, and the Blues gradually worked their way back into the contest with the only goal of the third term and drew within three points early in the last when Jessica Stramandinoli roved the back of a pack to kick her first major at the level in only her second game. But Port took less than two minutes to answer through Beth Wilson, and when Sophie Locke added another the visitors had answered the challenge to keep their season from going onto life support well before the midway point. Carlton had the upper hand in hitouts (36-27) and clearances (27-25), but the Borough’s half-back line repelled the Blues time and again to give their forwards a 35-29 advantage in entries that they should have taken more of. Meg Macdonald responded to her omission from the Richmond AFLW team in style by gathering a game-high 25 disposals, eight marks and five clearances as she roamed far and wide, with good support coming from Kaitlyn O’Keefe (17, 11 tackles, four clearances, five inside-50's), Olivia Barton (19) and Akayla Peterson (15, seven tackles, five inside-50s), while captain Claire Dyett had a solid return from injury with 14 and four inside-50's. Millie Klingbeil (20 disposals, nine tackles five clearances) and Ashlee Thorneycroft (19, six tackles, seven clearances, six inside-50's) were in everything for Carlton while the competition’s most prolific ruck, Jorja Borg, again dominated the hitouts with 30 (plus five tackles) and Annie Lee (six rebounds), Lily Goss (nine tackles, six inside-50's), Imogen Milford (eight tackles), Poppy Schaap (eight tackles) worked hard all day.

Round 5

Saturday 12th March, 2022 (4pm).

Played at Ikon Park, Carlton.

Carlton 1.0-6, 2.2-14, 3.2-20, 3.4- (22)

Result: Lost by 8 points.

Match Review

The Darebin renaissance is continuing after the Falcons became the first VFLW team to win 50 matches after overwhelming Carlton by eight points at Ikon Park on Saturday. The powerhouse Falcons raced to 42 wins in the first three years of the new competition to the end of 2018, but the next eight have been a lot harder to come by – just four in 2019 and one in 2021 before they completed a third victory in the first five rounds of this season to hit the milestone in their 84th match and celebrate Nicole Callinan’s own 50th VFLW game in style. Darebin led by by two, seven and three points at every change and refused to concede to a Carlton team that was desperate to bounce back from its loss to Port Melbourne a week earlier. Lily Goss kicked Carlton’s third goal in the fifth minute of the third quarter to mak it a two-point ball game and the defences took over, with just two behinds each added from then until Emma Mackay won a sprint back to the goalsquare to soccer the sealer with the last kick of the game. Angelica Gogos continues to prove herself to be one of the recruits of the season with 22 disposals and eight tackles to drive Darebin’s resurgence, while Naomi Celebre (19, six clearances, five inside-50s), Callinan herself (18, six clearances, five tackles), Mackay (13, five clearances, two goals) and full-back Victoria Blackwood (five tackles, seven rebounds) were also important. Ashlee Thorneycroft was Carlton’s best player, earning team highs in disposals (19) and clearances (five) and laying a remarkable 15 tackles, while ruck Jorja Borg wasn’t far behind, winning a staggering 44 hitouts in a terrific battle with Falcon Sally Lynch (30) while also having 16 touches and seven tackles. Annie Lee worked hard down back and had four marks and six rebounds, while Lauren Brazzale and Bry Gurr (17 each) were also good.

Match Review

Blues shock Magpies.
Carlton revived its fading finals hopes and opened the door to several other clubs after stunning a fast-finishing Collingwood by three points in the rebel VFLW at Ikon Park on Saturday. The Blues had not beaten the Magpies in four previous attempts but stuck with their more fancied opposition before making a move in the third quarter and holding on in the last for one of the best wins in their short history. Carlton’s 3.1 to 0.1 third quarter was one of the most significant it has had against an archrival that won 18 matches in a row before this season but now finds itself on the brink of missing the finals unless it can rediscover its mojo. Millie Klingbeil was the star for the Blues, racking up 21 disposals, eight clearances and five inside-50's, Thomay Nicolaou had her best VFLW game with 19 possessions, Ally Bild had 18, five marks and six tackles, Ashlee Thorneycroft led the defence with 16 touches, seven tackles and five rebound-50's and Steph Lawrence kicked two goals from 15 disposals. Matilda Zander was the most prolific player on the ground as she desperately tried to get Collingwood over the line, earning 22 disposals, six marks and five tackles, while Georgia Ricardo impressed down back with 18 touches, five marks and nine rebounds, Demi Hallett was her usual harassing self with nine tackles, Marla Neal had 15 touches, seven tackles and six clearances and Nyakoat Dojiok bobbed up for two goals.

Blues swoop on Pies
The Blues have hung on in a very close affair against the Pies - By Benjamin Hann.

Carlton have survived a late charge from Collingwood to win for the first time ever against the Magpies in the VFLW, breaking their three-game losing streak. The win is crucial for the Blues’ season, as they begin their recovery from their slow start to the year.

Quarter one
It was a bright start for Carlton to begin with, as the side piled on the opportunities, but in a familiar theme to previous games, they were unable to convert them into goals. Collingwood managed to take advantage of a fast-break chance for the first of the game. The latter stages of the quarter was a heavily contested affair, with both teams struggling to create quality forward 50 entries. Ashlee Thorneycroft was at her best in the midfield, starting the match with eight first-quarter possessions.

Quarter two
The second term started with a quick-fire goal for the Blues, after debutant Maddi Wilson kicked a fantastic goal from the boundary to level the scores. Mia Cowan then put the Blues in the lead, using her strength to fend off the opponent before kicking a goal at the top of the square. Some ill discipline followed from the home team however, resulting in a 50-metre penalty going Collingwood’s way, putting Shanel Camelleri on the goal line where she duly finished.

Quarter three
Carlton began the second half with energy, however this time around they took full advantage of their dominant play. Debutant Eliza Wood kicked the first of the quarter before Stephanie Lawrence kicked two in quick succession to give the Blues a 20-point lead. The Magpies began to wrestle back some control of the contest, but both sides were unable to create any further clear-cut opportunities before the final change.

Quarter four
Neither side were able to seize control in the early stages of the final quarter, with the ball spending most of it’s time in centre third of the ground. Collingwood slowly began to put the pressure on the Carlton defence, and halfway through the quarter, were able to break through for their first of the half and give themselves a chance for a late comeback. The goal seemed to inspire the away side, as they piled on the chances, kicking another to reduce the deficit to just five points. Some late chances for the Magpies came and went, but the Blues held strong to finish as the winners, breaking a three-game losing streak.

Stafford says: “Fantastic performance today, it was really pleasing to get some reward with the four points for their effort. “I thought everybody contributed really well on the field, and in particular, I want to give a special mention to the girls who played their first game of the season because I thought they really brought heaps to the side today.”

Match Review

Flying Hawks too good for Blues
Carlton were outmatched by Hawthorn at Box Hill. - By Benjamin Hann.

Carlton defended valiantly but were outclassed against a strong Hawthorn outfit with plenty of returning stars. In a wet and contested game, the Hawks were able to show why they will be a contender come finals time.

Quarter one
It was an even start to the opening term as both sides looked to create opportunities in the dewy conditions. Blues captain Ally Bild was electric to begin with, repelling multiple Hawthorn attacks. Carlton’s positive play against the more fancied Hawks was impressive, and it resulted in multiple marks inside 50, however they weren’t able to take advantage of their chances. Hawthorn finally penetrated the defence late in the term, kicking the first goal of the match after they were awarded a free kick deep in their forward 50. The Hawks were in control for the remainder of the quarter; however, they weren’t able to add to their goal tally.

Quarter two
The Hawks got an early goal to begin the second term, as the home side tried to put their stamp on the game. The weather began to worsen as the quarter went on, which seemed to suit the Hawks, as they nabbed their third shortly after. The Blues steadied thereafter, with the play becoming more contested as the ball got heavier. Despite some impressive rear-guard efforts from Nadia Moore and in-and-under work from Ashlee Thorneycroft, the Hawks managed to score their third goal of the quarter with less than a minute remaining, to ensure they had a commanding lead going into the main break.

Quarter three
As the rain continued to drift down at Box Hill, play became more rudimentary as the players struggled with the slippery ball. The Hawks were able to forge a few chances for themselves, however the Blues’ defence was effective in ensuring there was nothing concrete. As the quarter continued though, the Hawks became more dominant and soon they were able to breach the Carlton defence for their fifth of the afternoon. A bad day for the Blues suddenly became worse when forward Maddi Wilson was carried off the field with an apparent knee injury.

Quarter four
Hawthorn’s star inclusion Abbey Holmes began the final quarter with the side’s first goal of the final term, as the Blues began to tire. Carlton improved their skills during the term, with away side beginning to create opportunities again, however Hawthorn showed class down back and were able to repeatedly repel the attacks. The Carlton resistance was short-lived, and as the match entered it’s last five minutes, Hawthorn were able to convert their seventh of the afternoon.

Best: Ashlee Thorneycroft, Nadia Moore, Amelia Klingbeil, Ally Bild, Sarah Ingram.

Stafford says: “Tough day today at Box Hill, we were beaten by a very good side, we will regroup and bounce back and I’m looking forward to it next week.”

Bombers beat battered Blues
The Blues showed some positive signs despite defeat. - By Benjamin Hann

Carlton were outmatched by a very strong Essendon team but had plenty of positive moments in their match at The Hangar. The Blues were undermanned going into the match, only to lose gun midfielder Ashlee Thorneycroft early in the second quarter.

Quarter one
Essendon began the match by dominating possession but were unable to capitalise until they finally broke through halfway through the term. Carlton’s defence was under the pump from the outset, but thanks to some valiant defending from the likes of Nadia Moore, they were able to hold out the Bombers for the majority of the quarter. Essendon’s Georgia Nanscawen was the driving force for the home side, accumulating a monster 11 disposals by the first break.

Quarter two
Essendon started the second quarter in a similar fashion to the first, with the side wasting a multitude of opportunities as they struggled with accuracy in the windy conditions. The match became largely a kick-to-kick affair, with the ball moving between the 50's for most of the term. While the Blues certainly played better going forwards, the match could have been blown out if not for the Bombers’ missed chances, with the home side managing seven behinds without scoring a major.

Quarter three
Essendon were finally able to break the goal drought in the match eight minutes in, after Carlton were able to repel yet more inside 50's from the home side. The Blues almost kicked one of their own in a rare foray forward when Mia Cowan hit the woodwork with her kick around the body, before the Bombers quickly moved the ball the other way to score their fourth of the afternoon. The Blues definitely wrestled some momentum that quarter, but the midfield continued to struggle to handle Nanscawen who had 24 by the final change.

Quarter four
The last term started on a positive for Carlton, with Teagan Brett scoring her first goal for the club and the team’s first for the game. However, the Bombers quickly responded with two of their own, with the scoreboard beginning to represent the dominance that they had over the Blues. Carlton refused to lie down though, with the side creating plenty of late chances, resulting in a contested mark and goal for Cowan just as the final siren went.

Best: Millie Klingbeil, Bry Gurr, Jarvis, Borg, Moore.

Stafford says: - “I thought the girls endeavour today was fantastic, they stuck it out for four quarters against a really good opposition. We’re obviously focused on our continued growth and really looking forward to the second half of the season.”

Match Review

Carlton’s own finals chances remain dangling by a thread after it overcame Western Bulldogs by 28 points at Victoria University Whitten Oval on Sunday. The Blues took control with two goals in the first quarter before the Bulldogs produced a gutsy second term to hold their opponents scoreless despite managing only two behinds themselves, with a Mia Cowan major just 26 seconds into the third term ensuring there would be no upset. Lily Goss (20 disposals, five marks, nine tackles) was in fine fettle for Carlton, as was defender Bry Gurr (19, five marks, six rebounds) and Vanessa Murphy (18, seven marks, one goal), while Jennifer Lew (six marks), Thomay Nicolaou (six clearances) and Jorja Borg (34 hitouts) won their positions. Bulldog Britney Gutknecht (22 disposals, five marks, six clearances, eight tackles) was close to best-on-ground as Naomi Ferres, Tahlia Meier and Lucy Schneider (16 each), Riley Christgoergl (six marks) and Mikayla Barnes (six tackles) all tried hard.

North Melbourne won a virtual elimination final to cut the number of top-six contenders to eight with a 27-point win over Carlton at Ikon Park on Sunday. Match Review

There was little between Williamstown and Carlton all day, and there was even less at the end as the Seagulls and Blues played out a gritty draw at Williamstown on Saturday. Neither team managed to break through for a goal until another Sydney AFLW signing in Aimee Whelan kicked truly for the Seagulls at the 13-minute mark of the second quarter, with Eliza Wood kicking the Blues’ first five minutes into the third term. The visitors looked like winners when Mia Cowan gave them a seven-point lead with seven minutes to go, but Ellie Cleland got the goal back inside two minutes before Eliza Straford squared the scores with a behind shortly after, with neither team able to break the deadlock in the last three minutes. Whelan led all comers with 21 disposals, five marks, and a goal for Williamstown, while Sharnie Whiting was tireless in defence with 18, five marks and seven rebounds, Ruby Tripodi had 17, five clearances, five inside-50s and six tackles, Jasmine Kawa picked up 16, seven rebounds and five tackles and Alana Sarec had 20 hitouts. Carlton’s Madeleine Di Cosmo led the Blues with 20 disposals, while Lily Goss was outstanding in the clinches with 16 touches, four marks and 11 tackles, Bry Gurr had 15 and seven rebounds, debutant Brooke Plummer impressed with 16 and four marks, Jorja Borg had 39 hitouts.

Carlton Debutant: Ella Smallacombe.

Match Review

Southern Saints avenged their early season upset loss to Carlton by cruising to a comfortable 31-point victory at Wilson Storage Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Sunday. The Saints kicked themselves out of the game against the Blues in Round 2 but made sure there would be no repeat with three goals to none in the first quarter before Tayla Kearns’ second pushed the lead out to 24 points midway through the second. The Saints held Carlton at arm’s length for the rest of the day to move to 7-3-1 to celebrate the 50th games of Georgia McLean and Ebony Nixon, led by their regular stars in Hannah Stuart (24 disposals, five clearances), Alana Woodward (21, five marks, nine clearances, nine tackles) and Grace Buchan (18), while Kearns’ two goals were matched by Kayla Ripari and Chanelle Slater. Millie Klingbeil (16, five inside-50's), Madi Di Cosmo (16, four marks) and Brooke Plummer (15, four marks), Lily Goss (seven clearances, 10 tackles) and Jorja Borg (25 hitouts) battled hard for the Blues.

Match Review

Casey Demons retained hope of pinching the double chance after an Eliza West masterclass saw them overwhelm Carlton by 35 points at Ikon Park on Saturday. The Demons had the match won by quarter-time after kicking five goals to one, and while the Blues managed to break even after that, they were never able to make a dent in the deficit as West dominated the contest with 30 disposals, nine clearances, nine inside-50's and six tackles. Captain Sammie Johnson (19, five inside-50s, one goal), Megan Fitzsimon (18, two goals), Lucy Wales (15, 24 hitouts, one goal) and Shelley Heath (14, eight tackles, one goal) also impressed for the visitors, who can pinch a top-two spot by beating Essendon if Hawthorn suffers an upset loss to Williamstown (the Demons would need to win by 110 points to overturn their percentage deficit to the Bombers). Lily Goss continued her strong season for Carlton with a team-high 20 possessions, six clearances, five inside-50's and a goal, with Jennifer Lew (18, six marks, nine tackles), Jorja Borg (15, 25 hitouts), Bryannen Gurr (15, seven rebounds, six tackles) and Madi Di Cosmo (nine tackles, one goal) also able to hold their heads high.

Match Review

Stephanie Lawrence produced a stunning six-goal haul as Carlton signed off from its season in the best way possible with a record-breaking 83-point thumping of Western Bulldogs at Ikon Park on Saturday. The Blues kicked their biggest home score, conceded their lowest score at home and had their biggest win as they crushed a disappointing Bulldogs’ team that had been showing marked improvement in the second half of the year but finished 0-14 with a percentage of 16.15. Lawrence had kicked just 4.5 for the season in 12 games and 18 goals in 26 VFLW matches, but enjoyed a day most people can only dream of as she kicked three goals in the first quarter on her way to gathering 20 disposals and booting 6.2 before three quarter-time. Millie Klingbeil (23, eight clearances, two goals), Madi Di Cosmo (21, five marks), Lily Goss (20, nine tackles) and Serena Gibbs (13, five marks, five clearances, three goals) also starred, while Nadia Moore had 23 hitouts in the absence of prolific tap ruck Jorja Borg. Lucy Schneider played a lone hand for the Bulldogs with 26 touches and five marks and Mikayla Barnes had six clearances and eight tackles, but they ended up being held goalless for the fourth time this season.

Blues blitz Bulldogs to finish on a high

Carlton proved to be the far superior side at IKON Park, thumping the winless Bulldogs. - By Benjamin Hann.

Carlton put on a show in their final game of the season with the home side running out 83-point winners over the Bulldogs, sending a special goodbye to the retiring Jennifer Lew. A six-goal bag from Steph Lawrence alongside her 20 disposals meant the forward put in a best-on-ground performance, one that she’ll likely remember for a long time. Her performance was supported by many, especially from Millie Klingbeil, who finished with 22 disposals, eight clearances and two goals.

Quarter one
The Blues got off to a hot start with Steph Lawrence kicking a goal inside the first minute, after she played on with no one on the mark. The crafty forward soon had her second goal when she quickly snapped a shot goalward from a marking contest, the ball bouncing through to give Carlton a quick 13-point lead. Both sides had forward entries, however it was the home side who looked for more dangerous with their fast ball movement causing the Bulldogs’ defence some headaches. Carlton showcased some of their best football of the season late in the quarter when Olivia Madden kickstarted a skilful chain of play that took the home side from deep in the defensive 50 to a third Lawrence goal at the top of the goal square.

Quarter two
The Blues picked up where they left off to begin the second term, with Millie Klingbeil dribbling one through after she expertly roved the marking contest. The Bulldogs steadied though, as they began repelling the relentless Carlton pressure. Klingbeil and Lily Goss continued to dominate in the middle, however it was the exciting play of young Rylie Wilcox that was most impressive, accumulating plenty of the ball in the first half and playing a damaging role off half forward. The Bulldogs were able to stave off the home side for the majority of the quarter, until a late opportunity presented itself for Serena Gibbs who duly obliged to kick the Blues’ second of the quarter. It seemed only a matter of time before Lawrence kicked her fourth, once again turning on a dime before bending it through the big sticks to add to the Bulldogs’ woes.

Quarter three
The Bulldogs came out of the main break with more intensity, forcing Carlton to do some early defending. The Blues quickly regained their focus though, with Lawrence finding herself in the right place at the right time to nail home her fifth. The Bulldogs was under siege thereafter with players like Maddi Di Cosmo continuously intercepting the ball as they try and go the other way. The goals kept on tallying up for the home side, finishing with 10 unanswered for the game as the teams headed in for the final change.

Quarter four
Ella Smallacombe got Carlton off to a good start in the final term when she kicked accurately after taking a good grab in a marking contest. The next ten minutes saw very little in the way of opportunity for either side with the Blues having the majority share of territory. Eventually, Carlton were able to make a breakthrough, with Gibbs nabbing her third of the contest. A late goal for Vanessa Murphy was a just reward for her effort throughout the day, with their thirteenth goal of the day ensuring the match will live long in the memory.

Stafford says:
“It was such a great day today; it was fantastic that the girls could play their best footy in the final game of the season. They should be really excited about the growth going forward. A special mention, it was so special for us to get the win for our legend Jennifer Lew in her last game. Go well Jen.”

Best: Stephanie Lawrence, Madeleine Klingbeil, Serena Gibbs, Lily Goss, Maddi Di Cosmo, Vanessa Murphy.
