Richard Foster came up through the U/19's (1984 - 1985) to later play Reserve Grade Football from 1985 to 1987 for the Blues. Foster was recruited from Bendigo zone club Kangaroo Flat FC.

Foster was a versatile player who could play at both ends of the ground, he was mainly a forward who would quite regularly feature on the goalkicking tally sheet. In the 1987 Reserves Grand Final he lined up in the back-pocket.

Foster was a member of the 1987 Reserves Premiership Team.

Having played reserves football for Carlton Richard Foster was recruited by Port Adelaide, and he proved himself a handy acquisition. Elusive, and boasting plenty of pace, he slotted in nicely across half back, and could also play as a wingman or on a half forward flank. He played in a grand final-winning team against Glenelg in his debut season of 1988 and later also appeared in the winning flag deciders of 1990, 1992 and 1995. He retired after the 1995 grand final defeat of Central District, having played 145 SANFL games and scored 32 goals.

In 2014 he began coaching the Freeling Football Club (SA), departing the club midway through 2015.

He did not manage a Senior game for Carlton.
