Game Review

Spearheaded by their star forward Frank Caine, who kicked a new club record 8 goals - a remorseless Carlton combination demolished Fitzroy by 78 points in this match at Brunswick St. In control from the outset, the Blues just got more confident the further the game went on, and confirmed their standing as warm favourites for the 1907 Premiership with their biggest victory of the year to date.

Despite the absence of their captain Jim Flynn through injury, the ladder-leaders took control from the first minute of the game and were five goals up by half-time. From that point on, Fitzroy were held scoreless, while Carlton’s forwards added 8.8 in another percentage-boosting step toward the minor premiership. ‘Silver’ Caine was sensational in front of goal, and his eight majors lifted him to the top of the goal-kickers’ list with 23 – one ahead of Collingwood’s Dick Lee. Harvey Kelly continued to impress, and his three majors came through a combination of aerial ability and strength at ground level.

In another significant result for Carlton, Geelong took their best form to the Junction Oval and defeated a wildly-inaccurate St Kilda by four points. Therefore, Carlton was now one win (plus percentage) ahead of the Saints and Collingwood, with South Melbourne and Geelong locked in battle over fourth.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 1st spot on the ladder with a percentage of 158.5.
