Game Review

The Blues were too classy by hand and foot for Fitzroy and held a commanding 51 point lead at half time. Carlton were ably led by Jim Francis who played a superb game at centre half back. Jim displayed his football abilities of great marking, running, and kicking. Wingers Terry Ogden and Bob Green beat their usually skillful opponents, one of whom was the reigning Brownlow Medallist, Wilfred "Chicken" Smallhorn (170cm 62kg). Micky Crisp, Jack Cashman, and Keith Shea playing across the half forward line provided many scoring opportunities. The forwards were accurate, and overall it was a fast, and thrilling display of football by the Blues, who in the end were "toying" with their opponents.

A strong crosswind hampered good play early on in the first quarter. Horrie Bullen was prominent early and Creswell 'Mickey' Crisp scored the Blues' first goal. Carlton's rucks were dominant but Fitzroy's rover Hayden Bunton was providing the 'Roys with plenty of drive, and as a result of his good work Fitzroy equalised. Ron Cooper brilliantly evaded his opponents to kick the Blues' second goal. Terry Ogden intercepted a Fitzroy attack and drove the ball to Ted Pollock for another major. The Blues moved the ball the entire length of the ground through the agency of Maurie Johnson, Bob Green and Keith Shea without Fitzroy touching the ball. However only a behind was the result. Dangerous forward Creswell 'Mickey' Crisp was left unguarded and he found Ansell Clarke who goaled. The Blues were slightly aided by the cross breeze and led by 23 points at the first break, 4.7 - 1.2
Within a minute of the start Frank Anderson registered the Blues' fifth after splendid work by Maurie Johnson, Horrie Bullen, and Creswell 'Mickey' Crisp. Ruckman Horrie Bullen resting in the forward pocket had a purple patch and booted the next three goals. Carlton's centre and back line was superb, and when Frank Anderson again goaled the Blues led by 50 points. Fitzroy eventually scored their second goal, but when Jack Cashman marked strongly and goaled the margin was restored. At half time the Blues led by 51 points, 10.9 - 2.6
The restart was delayed when Umpire Disher after inspecting Fitzroy's boots sent Fleming back to the dressing room. When Fleming came back on, Disher again inspected his boots, satisfied, the third quarter began. Fitzroy attacked, but the Blues sent it forward and when a defender kicked across goal it went out of bounds. Ansell Clarke took the free kick and shot it across to Keith Shea for Carlton's eleventh goal. Clever play by Creswell 'Mickey' Crisp scored another major. The 'Roys scored their third goal, but Horrie Bullen replied almost immediately with his fourth, and Carlton's thirteenth. The visitors scored another goal, but again the reply was soon coming through the play of Ted Pollock. Fitzroy's centre line was now getting on top and provided the 'Roys with scoring opportunities and they added three late goals. At three quarter time the Fitzroy had reduced the deficit to 36 points, 14.9 - 8.9
The Blues got an early goal through Ted Pollock. Keith Shea was replaced by Frank Finn who went onto the ball. Skillful evading play by both Creswell 'Mickey' Crisp and then Ansell Clarke bought up the next two majors for the Blues. Maurie Johnson, Jim Francis and Ted Pollock were all major contributors to these two scoring opportunities. Just before the final bell Fitzroy scored another goal. An all round team effort enabled the Blues to run out easy winners by 51 points, 18.12 - 9.15

At the end of this round Carlton were in 5th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 116.9.

Old Players Entertained

At half time 100 past players for Carlton were entertained by the club. President Dave Crone said,
"It is not necessary to extend a welcome to you old players. This ground is your home, and you have the right to enter these rooms at any time."
"Among the old players present were P. O'Brien, C. Fisher, Valentine, Cook, H. Bell, R. McGregor, Jinks, Beck, H. Haughton, and many other club champions of the past years. Fourteen members of the team which won the premiership in 1914 were there.
An 1880's player George Bragge proudly boasted that during his career with Carlton he was not once free kicked. One of the guests was a brother of a member of the first Carlton team in 1864." (Argus/Age, Sept. 03)

Goalkeeper

An interesting item in Friday's Age about this match. "One alteration in the Carlton side last night, Gill being reincluded as goalkeeper in place of Park who has an injured ankle."
Goalkeeper is the original name for the fullback used in the early Pre VFL days.
