Game Review

The Blues crashed to their first loss since Round 9, 1995 (v. St Kilda) in this 53 point drubbing at the hands of relative newcomers Fremantle. Missing (from the '95 premiership side) were Captain Stephen Kernahan, Brad Pearce, Dean Rice, Peter Dean & Mil Hanna. Hickmott & Brown would suffer injuries during this game that would also keep them out of subsequent matches.

This game was probably the first sign that cracks were starting to appear in what had been up to then an invincible side, having won 18 games straight. Justin Madden struggled in the ruck against the younger combination of Bandy & Hynes. The Dockers, who were famous for a high number of talented aboriginal players such as Kickett, Dhurrkay, Chisholm, Abraham and Mitchell, ran the lethargic Blues off their feet. Former Roo Peter Mann would kick 4 goals from centre half forward. Both sides had 5 scoring shots in the second quarter. But while it was all goals for the Dockers, the Blues could only kick behinds and only managed to kick 6 goals in total.

Notable performances came from Craig Bradley with 31 possessions and 2 goals and Anthony Koutoufides sparking a brief revival after half time with 23 possessions. Michael Sexton & Ang Christou were solid in defence. Stephen Silvagni was thrust forward in the last quarter and kicked 2 goals from 20 disposals.
