Game Review
This game was played on Anzac Day, 1966. Three matches had been played the previous Saturday afternoon, and another three on this holiday Monday. In a tight, controversial encounter, Richmond prevailed by six points.
Carlton and Richmond fought out an exciting match at Princes Park with the Tigers more accurate kicking giving them victory. Paddy Guinane, Fred Swift and John Northey scored Richmond's goals while the Blues major goal kickers were Ron Barassi and Serge Silvagni. - Football Record.
Siren troubles causes late games
A groundsman at Princes Park caused football mayhem today when he threw a master switch that cut power from the siren. The result was that Carlton and Richmond played an extra five and a half minutes. The emergency bell was missing, from the timekeepers' box. It was found later in a wheelbarrow under the scoreboard. The timekeepers tried to signal, the crowd jumped the fence and a mounted policeman galloped across the ground to tell the umpire, who couldn't be convinced. At the correct time Richmond led by eight points, and eventually won by six points. - 100 Years of Australian Football.
The Age
Max Thomas (Carlton)
"Took several good marks but spoilt the good work by shocking kicking. Seems likely to hold his place in the side.
Ian Robertson (Carlton)
"Seemed over-awed by the big occasion and did little to endear himself to the selectors for the next match. But he could become a regular player after grooming in the Reserves."
