Game Review

The Blues were blown away in the opening two quarters and were unable to fight their way back into the game and make up the difference on the scoreboard.
Carlton did not look like a team that had won eight of it's first nine games this season. The Blues were given a football lesson by the 'Roys. Carlton tried Serge Silvagni ,Gerald Burke and Peter Barry at full forward, then in desperation moved full back George Ferry to the position. Fitzroy constantly swept the ball from the centre putting the Blues' defence under tremendous pressure. In the third term the Blues put on six goals to two but the home team always controlled the game.
John Chick was the Blues only consistant player and he generated many forward moves for his team, he clearly beat Fitzroy's interstate wingman Ian Aston.

Race crash ruling
Carlton began the day virtually one man short when Bob Crowe stumbled while running down the race and injured his knee before reaching the playing field. He did not recover, limping with obvious pain whenever the ball came his way during the game, and failing to keep up with play. Carlton appealed to the umpire, and were allowed to substitute one of their reserves halfway through the first term, altough technically Crowe's mishap had taken place off the field. - 100 Years of Australian Rules Football.
