Game Review

Carlton's bustling centreman Berkley Cox had re-invented himself as a dangerous half-forward flanker during this season, and he featured again in this game - kicking three goals as the Navy Blues beat Essendon by six points in a thrilling and willing contest at Windy Hill.

The Bombers dropped to fifth after this defeat, and Carlton remained sixth.

A strong breeze favoured the outer goal all day. Carlton kicked with the wind in the first quarter and perhaps they should have made better use of it. Essendon scored five goals in the second term. Again Carlton failed to take advantage of the wind in the third term with both teams scoring 1.3. With only 2 points in it at the last break the Dons looked like they would go on to win.
However, the Blues jumped the home team in the last term. Against the wind the Blues kicked three unanswered goals. Peter Barry a clever left foot snap. A nice running drop kicked goal by Trevor Best and strong bullocking work and goal by Berkley Cox to give the Blues a match winning twenty-one point lead mid way through the quarter. Carlton then withstood a mini Essendon resurgence to hold on for a great win by six points.

Second gamer Dave Rogers played well at full back. His marking and drop kicking a highlight.
John Reilly was moved to the back pocket to replace Brian Buckley and regular full back Peter Barry came on to play the forward pocket role.
Centreman Murray Kick missed the second half with a knee injury, a pinched cartilage.
On Monday, The Age reported that the club may have misdiagnosed the injury, as there was no swelling overnight and Murray may be able to resume training.
