Game Review

Carlton’s big forwards; Mick Grace, Frank Caine and Harvey Kelly, were all prominent as the Blues tuned up for the finals with a 26-point win over Melbourne at Princes Park. The Fuchsias started impressively and had the best of play in the first quarter, although they missed some relatively easy shots at goal and should have done better than 2.9 at quarter time. After that, Carlton took control – particularly in the air – and drew away to another solid 5-goal win.

Kelly kicked 4 goals, and ‘Silver’ Caine added two to maintain second place on the League’s goal-kicking table behind Dick Lee of Collingwood. With just the finals left to play, Lee had a firm hold on the award with a total of 47 majors. Len Mortimer of South Melbourne was second on 35, with Caine of Carlton next with 32.

Remarkably, Collingwood lost the third of their Sectional matches in straight sets when they fell to Geelong by five points at Victoria Park. Although the result made no difference to their final ladder position – fourth behind Carlton, South Melbourne and St Kilda – the Magpies had lost all their momentum and were headed for elimination the following week.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 1st spot on the ladder with a percentage of 155.7.
