Game Review
Looking to consolidate their finals hopes after consecutive victories over St Kilda, North Melbourne and Gold Coast, the Navy Blues met future Grand Finalists Fremantle at Docklands on this fine Saturday night, and came away on the wrong end of a 6-goal defeat. In a tight, willing contest from siren to siren, the Blues showed commendable grit to be right in contention until late in the final term, when the Dockers broke away to kick four of the last five goals of the match, and climb to the fourth rung of the ladder.Carlton went into this game with an unchanged line-up, apart from relieving Jaryd Cachia of the role of substitute and asking Kane Lucas to don the yellow vest once more. A good crowd of more than 30,000 turned up, to see if the Blues had really made any progress toward becoming finals contenders.
A switched-on Carlton combination started well and kicked the first three goals of the opening quarter, before Fremantle replied with four of their own to lead by 8 points at quarter-time. With Chris Judd, Heath Scotland and Zach Tuohy leading by example, it was a similar story in the second term – although Carlton suffered a blow when Andrew Carrazzo tore a calf muscle in the first minutes and was subbed out early. With defence paramount, each team kicked three goals for the quarter and at the long break Freo was up by a tenuous 9 points.
The early stages of the third term belonged to Zach Tuohy. Twice – at the 6 and 8-minute marks – the daring Irishman played on, and bombed the ball long for spectacular goals to give him three for the match. Thanks to Tuohy, the Blues hit the front for the first time, but it wasn’t to last. Small forwards Walters and Ballantyne replied for Freo, and despite another huge running goal from Matthew Watson – who launched a ball-burster from well outside the 50-metre arc, and rode it home – the Dockers held on to a 10-point advantage at three-quarter time.
To the chagrin of the predominantly Carlton crowd, Fremantle swarmed all over their opponents in the first ten minutes of the last term, and only circumstance kept the Blues in it. Although they dominated, the Dockers just couldn’t kick straight. They had had 25 scoring shots to 17 after 8 minutes of play, but their lead was only 13 points.
Eventually however, the relentless pressure that the Dockers continued to apply told, and they cracked Carlton’s defence to kick four unanswered goals in the middle ten minutes of the quarter. Lachie Henderson pulled a late one back, but the horse had bolted and Freo coasted to an emphatic victory.
While this defeat was a setback for Mick Malthouse’s men, the ramifications could have been worse. Other results fell Carlton’s way, and the Blues still clung to ninth place, two wins behind eighth-placed Port Adelaide. In an even team performance, those who caught the eye most often were Kade Simpson (30 possessions, 8 marks) Heath Scotland (31 possessions, 8 marks) and Zach Tuohy (16 possessions at 94% efficiency, 6 marks, 3 goals).
Subs: Kane Lucas replaced Andrew Carrazzo early in the 2nd quarter.
