Game Review

Revisit Rounds 01
In yet another draw with South Melbourne, star full-back Ernie Jamieson was Carlton's saviour once again. The Bloods led by 4 points at quarter time, three points at half-time, and just one point with a quarter to play. A Vin Gardiner goal late in the term seemed to set up a Carlton victory, but the Bloods answered quickly to level the scores - and in a hectic climax, Jamieson took two crucial marks to deny the home side victory in a contest that could scarcely have been more even.

Rod McGregor returned to the side after a 12 month ban imposed on him by the Carlton committee. In one of the 1912 semi finals McGregor was playing poorly and his captain Jack Wells asked him to play on the forward line. He refused because he thought the crowd would think he was "crook." For disobeying his captain the committee stood him down for the 1913 season, and refused to give him a clearance.

"One of this season's player was the pick of Carlton's basket. Leehane played magnificent football throughout, working with clockwork precision with Valentine, who ranked next in merit. Haughton, especially when defending, did great work, whilst supporters must have been gratified at Baud's return to form. This stylish player was at his best, and should now be a prominent factor in their games to come." (Melbourne Punch 21 May p46)

At the end of this round Carlton were in 7th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 130.3.
