Game Review

Over night rain had soaked the ground. A cold north west wind favoured the southern Corio Oval goal. The match commenced at 3pm after Horrie Clover had won the toss with the Blues kicking with the aid of the breeze. Carlton wasted it's opportunities in the first term. The Blues managed a couple of behinds by Harold Carter and Ernie McAlpine before Rupe Hiskins snapped Carlton's first goal. Geelong quickly replied with their first major. A nice mark by Alex Duncan resulted in only a single. Good work by Newton Chandler enabled Ernie McAlpine to score the Blues' second goal. Behinds to Ernie McAlpine and Horrie Clover followed. Rupe Hiskins marked, but his kick was stopped on the goal line by a Geelong defender. Horrie Clover's shot hit the post. However, a long kick from a scrimmage by Maurie Beasy went through for Carlton's third goal. Opportunities were again wasted when shots by Horrie Clover, Alex Duncan, and Harold Carter all registered minor scores.
At quarter time the Blues led by 21 points, 3.9 - 1.0
It was a role reversal with Geelong doing all the attacking and holding Carlton scoreless for the term. The Blues backline was under constant pressure, but fortunately the Pivot's forwards were off target. The weather had improved a bit but the fickle wind was still tricky. Carlton trailled at half time by 6 points, 3.9 - 4.9
Carlton opened the attack but Pat Kennedy's attempt only added another behind. Clever play by Horrie Clover to Newton Chandler but his shot added another minor score. Then a change came over the game and the Blues slammed on three quick goals. A shot on the run by Horrie Clover went through. Maurie Beasy to Hedley Blackmore for another, then Horrie Clover goaled who was aided by Ernie McAlpine. McAlpine had a shot but added another another behind. The Geelong backline was rattled and Hedley Blackmore added two more singles. The Blues had held the home team scoreless for the term, but should have been further in front. The Pivots would have the use of the wind in the last quarter.
At three quarter time the Blues held a handy 17 point lead 6.14 - 4.9
The Blues went forward but Alex Duncan's soccered attempt went through for a behind. Geelong then added a couple of goals and behinds. With the light failing Carlton clung to a four point lead. The Blues attacked, but the Geelong defence held firm. A Geelong forward out marked Paddy O'Brien and his kicked sailed through. Geelong had hit the front by 2 points with 10 minutes remaining. The influence of the wind could not be overestimated with play confined for much of the day on this south east side of the ground. The home team then added to their tally to run out winners by 15 points. 14 goals 26 behinds were kicked at this end, while only 1 goal and 1 behind at the other. The Blues losing 6.15 - 9.12

At the end of this round Carlton were in 9th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 89.4.
